Spine Ride

The Canadian Paraplegic Association is pleased to partner with CycleSpine for the Spine Ride Canada Tour. 

Preparations are underway as Brian and Renato train for the Trans Canada SpineRide and fine-tune their equipment. The riders recently purchased a 34 foot Fleetwood motorhome to accompany them on the trip. The SpineRide Canada kick off is scheduled for June 25th from the Canadian Paraplegic Association's Ontario Branch AGM in Toronto. 

CycleSpine is a volunteer association that was formed in 2007 by two men who had a dream.  “Spinal Cord injury is a disastrous condition that can completely consume a person’s life.  To recognize the special needs of individuals who have spinal cord disabilities, we combined our passion for cycling with this need to create Spine Ride Canada”, says Dr Alessandrini cardiologist at the Oshawa hospital and the main organizer of the tour. 

The organization’s mission is to support and preserve by improving nervous system education.  We will endeavour to lessen the burden of spinal cord injuries not only by fostering prevention awareness but also by raising funds to support those already tragically affected by this disastrous condition.  Having said this, Spine Ride Canada has agreed to donate all funds generated by the Canada wide tour to CPA. 

The two participants in the Tour are Dr. Renato Alessandrini and Brian Brideau both from Oshawa, Ontario.  Both men have been affected by SCI. Renato has a cervical disk injury that occurred while playing ice hockey in 2002, while Brian, has a brother who has been affected by a disastrous spinal cord injury.  Both men want to promote SCI prevention through education and they believe that this cross Canada bike tour will enable them to reach their goal.

 “Brian and I are going to cycle across Canada this summer to promote this cause.  The Canadian Paraplegic Association is a well-organized national association.  We believe that, together, we can achieve our goals.  We hope that our partnership with CPA will help promote our event and generate some funds for SCI, says Renato.  It is also important that people realize that we are not asking for personal financial support for the ride.”

The bike tour will commence on June 30th at Stanley Park in Vancouver and finish on August 8th at the HMCS Bonaventure Anchor in Halifax.  The tour is an estimated 6 672 km.  Please check out CycleSpines website at cyclespine.com for more information on the organization or to leave a message of encouragement.
